It's nice having a big old dead tree out back. What some may see as a widowmaker, I see as a playground for woodpeckers—red-bellied, downy, hairy, and pileated. Flickers too. No word on whether yellow-bellied sapsuckers have any plans to join the fun.
The denuded oak affords a clear view of others as well. Here's the the same red-tailed hawk who swept through our yard with a bunny in its grip a couple of days ago:August isn't necessarily the most exciting time for birding, but this buteo rested here for a good long spell, seemingly oblivious to the croaks and squawks of the crows and blue jays who didn't appreciate the visit as much as I did.
